I don’t know, what’s an ommer to do?
Things falling apart left right and centre, people arguing and being abusive, political earthquakes, routs, coups, all sorts of crap going down. From the macro to the micro, there’s a lot of division and that’s never good.
The etymology, the word origin, of ‘devil’ is from the Latin word ‘diabolos’, meaning ‘on two sticks’. This points to a sense of evil around the notion of division. Somehow (and we all have our ideas on this) a great division has been exposed, possibly created, at least nurtured, at worst exploited.
As ever, my personal aim is to zoom out, to try to get the bigger picture. While I naturally have my own position on current affairs, I am aware that my opinion is predicated on all sorts of things that are unique to me, so we’ll dispense with that for the time being. What do I see on zooming out? Well, I don’t want to be too negative so I’ll skip the details on that too.
We all want the same thing. No matter where we come from, we all want the same thing: to be free from hunger, pain and fear, to be able to offer our children and grandchildren a good future, to be able to sleep safe at night. To be able to go about our business without having to explain ourselves. In short, we all want to be happy and there are myriad opinions on the best way to achieve that.
It is so dispiriting to see so much conflict. How wonderful it would be if we could unite around what we have in common instead of dividing around what sets us apart. You may say I’m a dreamer…
When things get scary, it is natural to run to a place of safety. Unfortunately, what seems safe is usually what seems simple, and the truth of things is not simple. Black and white thinking, opposites, dualities, can seem very attractive when there’s confusion around. Holding the middle ground is difficult, especially when the pressure’s on, which it certainly is at the moment. I don’t doubt that everyone thinks that they know what should happen now. Everyone thinks they have the correct balance of head and heart.
Maybe one thing to bear in mind is that the one who presents the choice always, always, always has their own agenda in mind when they present that choice. The very presentation of the choice is a loaded dice. And we all know how that game ends.
